Frequently Asked
Questions
The North American Drama Therapy Association defines drama therapy as "the intentional use of drama and/or theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals." It's an active, embodied approach. Sessions may include improvisation, storytelling, enactment or creative projectives. The work supports embodied expression of feelings and relational healing. It challenges the roles we need to step out of, or into, in everyday life.
Drama therapy pioneer Renée Emunah summerizes further that Drama Therapy is:
"The intentional and systematic use of theater process and techniques to achieve psychological growth and change. The tools are derived from theater. The goals are rooted in psychotherapy."

The "Alternative Training" route is The North American Drama Therapy Association's non-degree path to the Registered Drama Therapist (RDT) credential.
It's designed for people who hold (or are pursuing) a master's degree in a related field, or who want to earn the RDT without attending one of the full-time drama therapy master's programs.
The required coursework includes 24 credits of drama therapy courses and 12 credits of psychology courses, plus an 800-hour supervised internship. For students counting Alt+DT courses toward alternative track requirements, credit is based on successful completion of the coursework; details are in each course syllabus.
Alt+DT offers in-person NYC courses that help meet the drama therapy coursework component.

No. While this training is experiential, you do not need acting experience or a background in creative arts therapy to participate. No clinical or psyhcology background is necessary, nor is a desire to become a registed drama therapist. If you're curious about drama therapy, that's enough.
